Trains in the Rain in Auburn, WA 1-23-2016
I was down in Auburn, WA (about 20 miles south of Seattle) on rainy, overcast day. Fortunately, Auburn Station has a covered pedestrian overpass, which enables one to shoot video without getting the camera soaking wet.
Listening to my scanner, I heard a train approaching. So I trudged up to the overpass and set up for the shot.
Our first train was a short manifest freight, running south on Main 1. The lead engine was a leaded engine, CREX 1329 (ES44AC).
The rain slacked off a bit, so I went down on the platforms, where I could still shoot under cover of the overpass.
Next up was an Amtrak Cascades passenger train, running south on Main 1. The train was led by a non-powered cab car with AMTK 93 (P42DC) pushing on the rear.
Twenty minutes later and the northbound Main 1 signal went to Approach Medium then to Clear. So I setup to see what was coming.
As I waited, a track inspector came motoring down Main 2 in his Hy-Rail truck.
And our last train came into view, a garbage train led by BNSF 5004 (C44-9W). This would be an empty train, coming from the landfill in Roosevelt, WA and headed to either Seattle or Everett.
Freight:
CREX 1329 / BNSF 7955
ES44AC / ES44C4
Amtrak:
AMTK 93 / P42DC
Garbage:
5004 / 4150
C44-9W / C44-9W

A Pair of Trains in Auburn, WA, 1-18-2016

For my first video of the year, I'm trackside in Auburn, WA - about 20 miles south of Seattle. I'm just north of Auburn Station near the W Main St crossing. The Auburn North signal just north of me is showing Diverging Clear on Main 2 so a train is due soon. It turned out to be an oil train led by BNSF 8215 (ES44C4). She's just coming out of Auburn Yard and is under high throttle getting up to ...
Crew 2 departing Stacy Yard, Seattle, 11-23-2015

Today I'm outside Stacy Yard in south Seattle. It's a normal winter day in Seattle - bitterly cold and heavily overcast. Two locos just entered the yard running light power. They hooked up to a string of cars and waited for the yard dispatcher to give them permission to head out. Took awhile, but they finally departed. This is Crew 2, they service customers in south Seattle, Tukwila, Auburn and...
Two southbound trains in Edmonds, WA, 9-7-2015

On Labor Day, I made some extra cash by running a delivery to Port Angeles for our company. I came back via the Edmonds-Kingston ferry. As my ferry approached Edmonds, I could see a southbound train waiting at Milepost 18. From Milepost 18 north, there are 2 main tracks. South of Milepost 18 there is only 1 main track. So it's common to see southbound trains held at Milepost 18 waiting for a no...

Today I'm in Tukwila, WA, just south of Seattle to catch three trains in quick secession. First up is a northbound manifest freight, pulled by a trio of Dash-9 locos, led by BNSF 5258 (C44-9W). Next up was a southbound loaded garbage train, pulled by two GEVO C4's, led by BNSF 6907 (ES44C4). The C4 locos have 6 axles but only 4 have traction motors. They cost less to buy, and are used on relati...

Well, fellow railfans, I have a very special treat for you today. Something you, literally, can see nowhere else. Here is the story, which is longer than the video! On a summer afternoon I had parked by the mainline in south Seattle. There is an overpass that I though would be a good place to catch a northbound train. While waiting and listening to my scanner the Renton Rocket local job snuck u...
Three freight trains southbound on Main 2, Kent, WA, 7-27-2015

Today I'm in Kent, WA, about 15 miles south of Seattle. I've set up just south of downtown. From here I can see the southbound signals at CP Willis, which helps me know if a train is approaching. First up is a garbage train on Main 2, led by BNSF 7039 (ES44C4). This train originated from either Seattle or Everett and is headed to the landfill in Roosevelt, WA. Next, I heard a crew calling Centr...

Today I set up in Tukwila, WA, 10 miles south of Seattle to see if could catch a train. As luck would have it, I caught 5 trains in two different locations. Sweeet! I started out at the Tukwila passenger station. An oil train led by BNSF 7399 (ES44DC) was first up, headed northbound on Main 1. This is a loaded train, full of oil from North Dakota. To add some interest, I did something you can't...

It's a nice, warm summer day in Seattle and I'm trackside at the Horton St crossing south of the city. The Main 3 signal went green so a train is due soon. Around the curve comes BNSF 7854 (ES44DC) pulling a southbound garbage train. This is likely the INBROO (Interbay to Roosevelt) loaded with garbage going to the landfill in Roosevelt, WA. As always, garbage trains smell really great on a hot...

Today I'm hanging out on the Seattle waterfront. It's a hot day and I'm loving the cool breeze coming off Puget Sound. Listening to the scanner, I hear a train leaving Balmer Yard headed my way. The train turns out to be a vehicle train led by BNSF 7250 (ES44DC). She would have just come in from Chicago loaded with autos from plants in the Midwest. The autos will be unloaded at yards south of h...

Today I'm at Burlington Green Park in Kent, WA - about 20 miles south of Seattle. It's threatening to rain so I'm positioned in the gazebo, just in case. We had a nice sunny spring day here in the Pacific NW and I'm in Tukwila, about 15 miles south of Seattle. Listening to my scanner, I heard a train was coming northbound. I crossed over to the west side of the tracks to get the afternoon sun at my back. You yourself put the caption on about how great the train and yard sounds are, so why did you spoil it and drown it out with a worn out cliche such as the blue danube waltz bit.. I know others have commented that they like it, or thought it was funny ~ I know now that there is a god ~ for he hath protected me from the misery of personally knowing these people.

    Like it is in Chicago...many Highrises and Condos are squeezing railroads to have to go through locations like this...but I think they are fun to watch and photograph! I have to make another trip out there one of these days! Ten to One they have passed ordinances about Trains blowing horns at crossings in this area! But they can use the bells, however.

      +Aidan Rose What you're seeing there is the radiator shutters closing. The shutters are painted orange, so it does look a bit like they are "glowing". The shutters open and close automatically to keep the engine water temp in the correct range. If the loco sits idle for a bit, they close to keep water temp from falling too low. Once the loco starts pulling, they'll open to keep the water from getting too hot.

    If you have a trash train, how do they dump the cars?

    • @SeattleRailFan
      @SeattleRailFan 8 років тому

      +Richard Moses The containers used for garbage are standard shipping containers with the roof removed. This allows them to be loaded easily with a front end loader. They have canvas tops that cover the load during shipping. At the landfill, the containers are lifted off the well cars and put on a regular trailer chassis. Trucks drive them up to the top of the hill where the landfill proper is located. There, the trucks back onto a platform at the edge of the landfill. Hydraulics tilt the whole platform up, dumping the garbage out the back. The trucks take the containers back down the hill, the empty containers go back on the well cars and the whole cycle repeats again.

      +Yard Limit Auburn Station and Kent Station are both nice in that they have a parking garage right there so parking is easy, covered overpass for shooting on rainy days or getting to the other side of the mains easily and benches on the platforms so you can sit down while waiting. Good view of signals from the platforms as well which helps you determine if a train is coming. Disadvantage is the platforms aren't very wide so you tend to get an exaggerated closeup view of trains as they pass.

    They're going to add a third BNSF mainline to the Seattle Sub? Traffic must really be picking up! How would they fit a third track in through all of the railroad crossings and Sounder sations?

    • @SeattleRailFan
      @SeattleRailFan 8 років тому

      +jpfrench325 Yes, they're in the process now. BNSF got the money for the 3rd main from Sound Transit. BNSF must give Sounder trains priority over all freight, they must meet strict on-time standards. So right now, between Seattle and Tacoma during rush hour BNSF gives one main over to Sounder leaving only one track for freight. With a 3rd main between Seattle and Tacoma, BNSF can use two track for freight, making it easier to run freight north and sound during rush hour. The 3rd main is done from King Street Station to somewhere around south of Boeing Field. They are starting in on the next segment now. Work is going on around Tukwila, then I think they'll work they're way down to Auburn.

    Real nice video SeattleRailFan. Is the consist heading to a landfill with all that garbage and contaminated soil and debris? Sidebar: the facades on some of those condos along the waterfront (at the beginning of the video) could certainly use some color, heh! Unlike Ireland and Scandinavia where splashes of color on their facades add 'interest and depth' to the entire scene scope. I spent a short 'hard days night' in Seattle when I was with the Amtrak; whew what a night that was.

    • @SeattleRailFan
      @SeattleRailFan 8 років тому

      +Dimi Domo The first garbage train is an empty returning from the landfill. The 2nd train is loaded headed to the landfill. Google "landfill Roosevelt WA" to learn about where that garbage ended up. Seems like Seattle doesn't really do "splashes of color". Most newer condos/apt buildings tend towards pale neutral shades of browns, greys, green, blues etc. A few go for the bright colors, but not many.

    • @SeattleRailFan
      @SeattleRailFan 8 років тому

      +Saddle Sore It looks level to my eye. I'm guessing a railroad would generally want a yard to be pretty close to level. A yard with a significant slope would be a pain, requiring lots of hand brakes to be set in order to keep cars from rolling away.

    • @SeattleRailFan
      @SeattleRailFan 8 років тому

      +Yard Limit Probably a good chance of catching an oil train. As far as I know, they still run 5 or 6 trains per week into the refineries. If you have a scanner, monitor channel 76 (North Branch Dispatch). You may hear them talking to an oil train, giving you a heads up that one is coming. They may also reference the "Annie Local", that's the local job that services other customers on the Anacortes Spur. You will always hear the oil train call the bridge tender at the Swinomish Channel bridge. That's the bridge in my video. My shoot location, at the Swinomish Casino, is a great place to shoot from. And, if the trains aren't running you can go inside and play some craps, poker or slot machines! Also, you can go into Burlington and shoot at the Spruce St crossing. I did a video there, see: ua-cam.com/video/l8xTXeOThug/v-deo.html The trains run at only 10mph on the spur. You could shoot one in Burlington then sprint for the casino and also shoot it crossing the channel.

      @YardLimit 8 років тому

      +SeattleRailFan Thanks for the info. We're going to stay at the Swinomish hotel sometimes in April so that will be a good time to catch one. I'll definitely keep my scanner tuned.

    • @SeattleRailFan
      @SeattleRailFan 8 років тому

      +Gary Ketola In the Seattle area on BNSF, the term Conductor is used on the long-distance trains. The conductor on a local job is call the Foreman. If a local has a third crew member, he's called the Helper. Don't know what a third crew member on a long-distance trains would be called, most just have two. I assume it's something that differs on different railroads or in different area of the country. I have a scanner so I'm sure of what terms are used locally.
